Music From Around the World Comes to San Diego's Balboa Theatre in 2009

"...top timba group in the United States."- Denver Post

"One of the year's better timba recordings comes from Tiempo Libre, and its debut Timbiando."-Latin Beat Magazine

"Traditional Cuban classics meet soaring joyful vocals and an impressive horn and percussion section driving a booty-shaking party guaranteed to pick up your mood."

-San Francisco Spectrum
Join the dance party when the Balboa Theatre is transformed into the hottest nightclub in town, featuring Miami's two-time Grammy®-nominated sizzling timba band Tiempo Libre. The newest and most controversial music out of Cuba, timba is like salsa on steroids incorporating Brazilian, R&B, hip-hop and salsa along with an inducing mix of high voltage Latin jazz and the seductive rhythms of Cuban "son."

Tiempo Libre, classically trained in Cuba's premiere conservatories (at a time when it was illegal to listen to American songs on the radio), were all enjoying thriving careers performing, touring and recording with such artists as Albita, Cachao, Arturo Sandoval, Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Isaac Delgado, when they came together to realize their collective musical dream: to create the first authentic all-Cuban timba band in the United States. Their eagerness to share their music with others led these multi-talented individuals to come together to develop their new style together, hence the name Tiempo Libre (Free Time). Now, the group is a hit in the U.S. and abroad, celebrated for its incendiary, joyful performances celebrating Cuban music. No matter where they perform be in concert halls, jazz clubs or dance venues, Tiempo Libre has a mission: to share their musical heritage with as wide an audience as possible.

The Irish Rovers

Sunday, March 15, 2009, 3:00 pm

"Highly talented...!" -Charleston Gazette

"Still the energetic crowd pleasers that have made them a world trademark."

-Charleston Daily Mail
When all the world is Irish celebrate St. Patrick's Day with the Irish Rovers! The Irish Rovers, who are passionate about performing and, like the Unicorn, they are legendary and magical; have delighted audiences for over thirty-two years with their blend of Celtic-flavored traditional, folk and popular music. The Irish Rovers have charmed and entertained people around the world and continue to delight audiences with their exciting stage shows. The Irish Rovers have never lost their timeless ability to deliver a rollicking, rousing performance of good cheer that will have audiences singing and clapping along.

The story of the Irish Rovers began in 1963, when the 16-year old George Millar and 23-year old Jim Ferguson, both new emigrants from North Ireland, met in Toronto at an Irish function. They ended up singing together ‘til dawn; and so the Irish Rovers were launched. The Rovers then headed off to "Americay." Landing at the famous folk club, The Purple Onion in San Francisco, they ended up headlining for an unprecedented 22 sold-out weeks. The folk clubs of California became the learning grounds for the young Rovers, and (through old-fashioned hard work and a wee bit of Irish luck) they were offered a recording contract with Decca Records. In 1966, "The First of the Irish Rovers", a live album was released. It generated enough excitement to warrant another album, and from this release came the million selling single "The Unicorn", the band's signature song to this day. The Rovers once again soared to the top of the pop and country charts with "Wasn't That a Party". This real-life celebration was written by their friend, U.S. folk singer Tom Paxton, after he witnessed one of the band's famous post-show parties. It went on to become an international anthem of good cheer. The band recorded "Grandma Got Run-Over by a Reindeer" in 1982, which has become a seasonal hit.

An Intimate Evening with Mariza

Tuesday, April 28, 2009, 7:30 pm

"...she sang an old fado, with her voice swelling to reach climaxes that were just short of tears." -New York Times

"Mariza gave a stunning performance...fully in command of a rich array of vocal timbres and a subtle sense of timing." -Los Angeles Times

Fado singers rarely find fame beyond Portugal's borders, and then along came Mariza who flung open the window in her modern take of the traditional form is propelling her on an international career. As the poet wrote, fado makes its way in the world through the transparency of its lyrics, and these Mariza sings with all her heart. Mariza is a Mozambican whose soul was forged in the old Mouraria district of Lisbon. It was there that she first heard fado singers. Even when experimenting with other rhythmic forms she has always sung fado.

Mariza sees the stage as her "living-room where she entertains her friends" and audiences feel this warmth. In Portugal, Mariza emerged as one of the best-loved artists in her homeland. She has been lauded by the Kingdom of Denmark and shared the stage with Sting. Mariza's passion for singing the word of poets makes them her own through her emotional interpretation.
