La Jolla Playhouse to Stage TRIBES as Part of 2013-14 Season

La Jolla Playhouse has announced the award-winning contemporary hit Tribes by Nina Raine as part of its 2013/2014 season (dates TBA).

Nominated for the 2010 Olivier Award for Best Play and winner of the 2012 Drama Desk and New York Critics Circle Awards, Tribes offers a biting, yet comic look at family dynamics. At its center is Billy, the deaf son of a raucous family of intellectuals obsessed with self expression. As his parents and siblings verbally spar and compete for attention, Billy catches what he can by lip-reading. When he finds a new family in the deaf community, a new world opens up to him and tensions reach an all-time high in this new play about membership in your tribe — and hearing what isn’t said. 

“With Tribes, British playwright Nina Raine delivers on the substantial promise of her earlier works,” said Playhouse Artistic Director Christopher Ashley. “It’s a beautiful, savage, moving and funny play, one that explores the difficult path we travel in order to belong to a community.”

Nina Raine received the 2006 London Evening Standard and the 2006 Critics’ Circle Awards for Most Promising Playwright. Her plays include Rabbit and The Drunks, and her directing credits include Shades and Behind the Image for The Royal Court Theatre; Unprotected at the Liverpool Everyman, Vermillion Dream at Salisbury Playhouse and Eskimo Sisters at Southwark. She has trained as an assistant director at the Royal Court under the Channel Four YRTDS scheme where she assisted the directors Dominic Cooke, Ian Rickson, Katie Mitchell, David Hare, James Kerr and Stephen Daldry.

As previously announced, La Jolla Playhouse’s 2013/2014 season will also feature a re-imagined production of the Tony Award-nominated musical Side Show, music by Henry Krieger, book and lyrics by Bill Russell and directed by Academy Award®-winner Bill Condon. Produced in association with The Kennedy Center, Side Show will premiere at The Playhouse in the fall of 2013 and will play the Kennedy Center Eisenhower Theater beginning June 2014. Based on the true story of conjoined twins Violet and Daisy Hilton who became stars during the Depression, Side Show is a moving portrait of two women joined at the hip whose extraordinary bondage brings them fame but denies them love.

The nationally-acclaimed, Tony Award-winning La Jolla Playhouse is known for its tradition of creating the most exciting and adventurous new work in regional theatre. Located on the UC San Diego campus, La Jolla Playhouse is made up of three primary performance spaces: the Mandell Weiss Theatre, the Mandell Weiss Forum Theatre and the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Center for La Jolla Playhouse, a state-of-the-Art Theatre complex which features the Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre.
