Cygnet Theatre to Kick Off Season 11 with Stephen Sondheim's COMPANY, 7/5-8/18

Cygnet Theatre announced today that it will kick off its 2013-14 Season with Stephen Sondheim's Tony Award-winning musical COMPANY. Cygnet has had a successful history of staging Sondheim musicals including critically-acclaimed runs of Sweeney Todd and A Little Night Music. They will be staging the thought-provoking Assassins in March as part of the current 10th Anniversary Season. The full line up for Season 11 will be announced at a later date.

Cygnet Artistic Director Sean Murray will direct and is in the process of casting and determining the design team for this summer production. Sondheim's revolutionary musical, directed by the legendary Harold Prince, won six Tony Awards in 1971, including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Lyrics and Best Book. The production featured Elaine Stritch performing the memorable "Ladies Who Lunch." The 2006 Broadway revival also won a Tony for Outstanding Revival of a Musical.

On the night of his 35th birthday, confirmed New York bachelor Bobby contemplates his unmarried state. Surrounded by "those good and crazy people, his married friends," Bobby weighs the pros and cons of married life, leading to one of the most profound conclusions in American Musical Theater. Company was among the first musicals to deal with adult themes and relationships. As Sondheim puts it, "Broadway theater has been for many years supported by upper-middle-class people with upper-middle-class problems. These people really want to escape that world when they go to the theatre, and then here we are with Company talking about how we're going to bring it right back in their faces."

COMPANY will be performed at Cygnet's Old Town Theatre July 5 - Aug 18, 2013. Opening Night is July 13, 2013. Show times are Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7:30 pm, Fridays at 8pm, Saturdays at 3pm and 8pm, and Sundays at 2pm and 7pm.

Subscription packages for Cygnet Theatre's 11th Season and Single Tickets will be available at a later date. For pricing and information regarding subscription packages, contact the box office at 619-337-1525 or visit www.cygnettheatre.com.

Ten years since taking flight, Cygnet Theatre has grown into San Diego's fifth largest theatre company and become known for producing adventurous, entertaining and thought-provoking live professional theater year round. Cygnet presents at least six main stage productions annually, ranging from classics and musicals to contemporary works that celebrate the human story at the recently renovated, state-of the-art Old Town Theatre in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Sean Murray and Executive Director Bill Schmidt, Cygnet has won more than 100 local awards for artistic excellence, including Theatre of the Year, Producer of the Year and multiple Best Production awards. In addition, Cygnet Theatre is committed to education outreach, new play development and community collaborations.
