BWW TV: Lamb's Players Releases 'Blackout Day'

This past summer, at Lamb's Players Advanced Musical Theatre Camp, under the direction of Associate Artistic Director, Kerry Meads, students were challenged to write the lyrics for an original song about the effects of texting and social media on their relationships.  They worked together as an ensemble, along with Lamb's Associate Artists, and brainstormed about their thoughts and feelings. Phrases flew out about their frustration with "faceless conversation" and "why can't we unplug and give a hug" or "Why do you only want to talk to me across a broadband?"  They expressed a longing for connection and community that they felt was epitomized by last year's blackout in San Diego on September 8.   Jon Lorenz, co-creator of "Mixtape", compiled their free flow of ideas into a song called "Blackout Day".

Students performed the song before friends and family at their showcase on the final day of camp on July 20.   The adults expressed their "surprise" that teenagers wished they could put the technology away sometimes and just spend time with their family and friends — face to face!  They said that we should record the song, the students were jazzed about the idea and so they reunited on August 15 and recorded the song under the direction of Leonard Patton.
